Anticipation for the PlayStation 5 is building and it looks set to be a quality console with powerful specifications as well as impressive exclusives. While there is a great deal of excitement surrounding the upcoming console, there are elements of it that are still not known. A new patent for an identification system has now surfaced that was not mentioned at the recent PlayStation 5 event and it looks like it could be useful to players.

Every installment of the PlayStation franchise has been well received and helped the home console series become the most successful of all time. With that in mind, players are expecting the PlayStation 5 to deliver exciting new technology. This patent looks set to bring new social technology to the franchise, as it will help players retain and identify their footage of gaming achievements.

The patent, shared by PatentScope, details an identification system that will stop videos of gameplay being shared on the internet anonymously. This patent is “a player identification system for identifying players from recorded video content.” It seems that frames from video clips will identify players through character and name recognition, which will then allow players to have content attributed to them correctly. While many PlayStation 5 players may not upload publically, this technology could also help with players who share videos with friends and want to prove the validity of their images. This may not be a huge change to the gaming experience but this does look like a step forward in terms of social sharing.

Sony patent PS5

At the moment, Sony is establishing several patents and trademarks in the build-up to the PlayStation 5. With that in mind, it is currently unclear whether these licensed materials will be featured at the launch of the next generation of consoles or whether they will be implemented in later editions of the console. Equally, some ideas may never make it to release as a patent is an early stage of the development cycle. It will be interesting to see if this patent is featured in the console, particularly as it was recently applied for.

This patent is for a piece of identification software and because of this, it could arrive in an update for the PlayStation 5 at any time. With that said, this seems like interesting technology, and many players would like to identify themselves on the exciting upcoming PlayStation 5 games at launch.

The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to be released in the holidays 2020.
