This year has seen a massive rise in gaming hardware sales for obvious reasons with the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Next-Gen consoles coming just after Nvidia began rolling out the GeForce RTX 30 series. However, the specific piece of hardware that has risen to the top as all of these exciting new consoles launch might comes as a surprise thanks to Nintendo's three year old Switch system.
According to a report from NPD Group, an analytics organization that collects and interprets sales and market interest data, 2020 has been the biggest year for gaming hardware on record. The data even shows that the PS5 is the top revenue earner for the year among competitors, even if the exact number of units shipped came shy of the competition.
When it comes specifically to the number of systems that actually sold, the Switch actually sold more units than PS5 in the month of November in particular. This includes the first half of the month when Nintendo's system was on shelves with little competition against it, but it doesn't include the other ten months of 2020. Of course, this comes as little surprise to groups like NPD that have been following these trends and previously witnessed the Switch continue to break sales records over the course of the last three years.
Of course, there is one important detail about these sales records to take into account when it comes to both Sony and Microsoft's new consoles compared to Nintendo's three year old system. The PS5 launch has been so record breaking that it is difficult for fans to find any units to take home, even on the virtual shelves where they are being cleared from seconds after restocking. So, while the Switch is currently selling more units than the PS5, the supply of both systems at this point in release is certainly a factor in that equation.
It's clear that players are excited to get their hands on both the Next-Gen performance of PS5, as well as the exclusives and unique design of the Switch. With exclusives pushing Sony's PS5 above the competition, the new system has a strong head start against its competition, but sales records for all of these will still come down to supply in the end. This is likely how Nintendo, after three years of consistent fabrication of Switch units, was able to move more units, although it shouldn't be ignored that the system is still dominating these sales records in 2020.
