Sony's elusive PlayStation 5 is still difficult for fans to get their hands on. Further, marketing games for PlayStation 5 has been a double-edged blade for fans who have been unable to purchase the console, though PlayStation 4 editions have been around for at least a majority of newer titles.

But another part of the PlayStation platform's latest iteration that has been difficult to promote ubiquitously has been its accessories. PlayStation 5's DualSense has since been given purchasable color palette swaps with Midnight Black and Cosmic Red. Finally, more than a year after the PlayStation 5's launch, the console itself is receiving a touch of unique ornamental accessories in an official capacity.

After having taken action against sites that were distributing custom console covers, Sony has officially announced and debuted several palettes of its associable PlayStation 5 console covers. Dubbed the Galaxy Collection, these covers include color palettes for Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. It is uncertain whether plans were always in place to supply fans with different colored faceplates or if competition nudged Sony into securing its patent, but their functionality suggests that it was always a viable option down the road.

Sony Senior Director Isabelle Tomatis explains that these faceplate accessories "are beautiful and easy to use," with instructions on how to swap covers being to "simply remove your original white PS5 console covers and click your new ones into place." Fortunately, Tomatis also states that the colored console covers are suitable for both the physical disc drive edition of the PlayStation 5 as well as the Digital Edition.

However, Sony's colored console faceplates will apparently have staggered and relatively undetermined release windows. While Midnight Black and Cosmic Red covers "will become available starting in January 2022," Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue will not be released until sometime in "the first half of 2022." Because only two color options will be available next month, it seems as though Sony and PlayStation want to get their official accessory out on the market to thwart would-be distributors of unofficial PlayStation merchandise that may otherwise thrive.

The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red console covers, which in turn match the currently available DualSense palettes of the same names, will be available for purchase from the PlayStation Direct store on January 21. Rather, they will not be available within physical retailers until February 18, which may mean that fans will have to get into store queues as soon as they open unless they do not mind waiting another month to shop for them on their own terms.
