Some video game players are taking issue with Sony's newly released logo for the PlayStation 5. Sony's presentation during CES 2020, the Consumer Electronics Show, drew the eyes of many PlayStation fans. Winter's a season with relatively few announcements, after all. Yet all Sony had to share about the PlayStation 5 was the unveiling of the next-generation console's logo. The underwhelming showing from Sony left many PlayStation fans disappointed, with a portion of fans even going so far as calling the PS5 logo lazy.

Following the Sony presentation at CES 2020, PlayStation fans took to the internet to spread memes as they're wont to do. For the most part, these memes were all in good fun. They joked about how Sony's logo for the PlayStation 5 swapped the PlayStation 4 logo's 4 for a 5, a relatively simple change. One post on Reddit's /r/gaming subreddit in particular went viral. The post in question received over 65,000 upvotes and featured an animation showing how Sony simply flipped the "P" in "PS4" to make the PS5 logo.

The replies to the post are largely in fun. Most of them mention Sony's consistency of design and how the design of the "5" in "PS5" is really quite clever. From a designer's point of view, it's artful. From a marketer's point of view, it's effective. Simplicity works just as well or better than complexity, in most cases. Sony simply asked why it should mess around with something that already works well. The PS5 logo is the result.

Not all fans agree on these points, however. Several of the comments are egregiously rude, harkening back to the most outspoken days of the console wars. Perhaps it's due in part to many fans hoping Sony would reveal something more substantial at CES 2020. Receiving a logo, and a somewhat bland logo at that, instead of a console reveal or details about the PS5's specs definitely made some fans frustrated.

To be fair to PlayStation, for every insulting comment about the PS5 logo there are a handful of insulting comments for the Xbox Series X. If this is another battle in the console war then PlayStation should feel comfortable with the state of things. Apparently the PS5 logo reveal is even the most popular image for a video game company ever on Instagram. Despite its detractors, people like the PS5 logo much like people liked the PS4 logo.

The PlayStation 5 launches in late 2020.
