The pipeline of rumors and leaks for the PlayStation 5 continues to hint at big changes for the next-generation console. Whether it's full backward compatibility with all previous PlayStation video games or the addition of a very fast SSD that will minimize loading times, the PS5 is set to deliver huge improvements over the PS4. Sometimes, though, it's best not to change what works. A newly claimed leak said to show the PS5's new UI looks quite similar to what's come before.

The leaked image was published on the website SlashLeaks by a user named John Titor. He says that it's "the first photo of the actual ps5 interface" and that it's also the final version of the UI, with the photo itself showing a very similar line of tiles akin to the PS4's UI. The "PlayStation Store" tile has been chosen, with other tiles including the browser, media, and PlayStation Now apps being shown. In the upper right corner, the PS4's "Friends" icon of two square smiling faces can be seen.

Compared to the PS4, the layout of the PS5's UI is very similar. For example, the Friends icon is always at the center of the screen, with the user's selected app just to the lower left of it. There is one item out of place just to the left of Friends that can't be fully read. It perhaps says "Notifications," which would be new for the PS5. Otherwise, the UI does look somewhat cleaner and crisper than the PS4's UI, but likely only for those with an eye for detail.

It should come as no surprise that this supposed leak should be taken with a grain of salt. There's nothing to indicate that this leak is either official or that it's a mockup made by a bored person with a graphic arts application. It does look sharp, but it also looks simple. That's a recipe for fake PlayStation leaks. But, in this case, it's also a recipe for what the official PS5 UI will likely look like.

There is one detail that gives this leak some credence. Just two weeks ago, another leak came through claiming to show the PS5 devkit's UI. The devkit photo does look similar to this newly leaked photo in some regards, though much less polished and finalized, but there's one detail in specific that needs to be acknowledged, though. Next to the Friends icon at the center of the screen, to its left, is the word Notifications. In other words, these two leaks share a unique quality. That could mean that they're both fakes from the same person, or it could be they're both accurate. Hopefully, PlayStation fans will find out the truth before too long.

The PS5 is planned for release in late 2020.
