One of the biggest tentpoles for Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation's success for 25 years is the already large library of exclusives. SIE has made of point of trying to offer a game for everyone out there that can only be found on PlayStation consoles, ranging from sports titles like MLB The Show to epic adventures like God of War. With the PlayStation 5 out in the wild, SIE's Jim Ryan doubled down on this and teased this generation will host the largest exclusives library in company history.

The CEO of SIE spoke with Japanese outlet Nikkei, translated by VideoGamesChronicle, about the PS5's early success and future plans for the console. These included the supply shortages due to demand and the coronavirus pandemic, plans to expand game and video streaming on PlayStation Plus, and Sony's own approach to the cloud.

However, one of the biggest teases came while talking about SIE's plans for their first-party development. Ryan said even before the PS5 was released, SIE was "quietly" investing in first-party game development to quickly fill out the new console's library. He said the goal is to develop more exclusives for PS5 than any other generation in PlayStation history.

Ryan added SIE was looking at more potential mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships to expand the number of first-party studios under the company's umbrella. Ryan did not say which developers SIE was targeting, but any acquisitions is going to join one of the most talented collection of studios in gaming. These include Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch Productions, Media Molecule, Polyphony Digital, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games.

As mentioned above, first-party titles is one of the biggest reasons PlayStation is the powerhouse in gaming it is today. SIE has already cultivated an exclusives library since the first PlayStation console that arguably rivals Nintendo's library of exclusives. The PS4 generation, alone, includes titles like God of War, Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part 2, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, Little Big Planet 3, Until Dawn, MLB The Show, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and The Last Guardian.

Looking ahead, Sony isn't showing any signs of slowing down either. The PS5 came out of the gate strong with Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls to welcome early adopters and are two of the more popular titles on the system. Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are next up, with Returnal dropping on April 30 and Rift Apart on June 11.

God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon 2: Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7 are also on the way, though no release dates have been announced.
