Sony has officially confirmed that it will hold an online event next week focused on unveiling new PlayStation 5 games. According to Sony, the event will focus entirely on PS5 games planned to launch holiday 2020. Expect over an hour awesome announcements and first looks. PlayStation fans can tune in online starting at 1:00 pm PT on June 4.

The announcement of Sony's "The Future of Gaming" PS5 event was made via social media and the official PlayStation Blog. In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan made his pitch to PlayStation fans. "The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe," is Ryan's promise. He says that the PS5 event will  feature games from studios large and small, new and old, that all showcase "the potential of the [PS5] hardware."

Ryan adds that he sees the lack of a physical event as an "amazing opportunity to think differently," promising that the PS5 game showcase will bring viewers and fans "closer than ever before." He also makes clear that Sony has multiple PS5 events planned to follow. These events will likely entail the reveal of the PS5 itself, as well as the console's price and final release date.

One question worth asking is whether or not the June 4 event will feature any first-party games. Ryan notably avoids clarifying whether first-party games are being shown, though he doesn't say they won't be shown, either. Microsoft is notably splitting off third-party Xbox Series X game reveals from its July first-party game showcase. Sony may or may not follow suit.

All PlayStation fans can do for the time being is look forward to the June 4 event, enjoy the full 60+ minutes of game reveals, and then look forward to more events later. Considering how hype PlayStation fans are for the PS5, that shouldn't be too difficult of a struggle.

Rumors have been circulating regarding a PS5 event at the start of June for some time, though the exact date has never been certain. June 4 was, funnily enough, the date that was first rumored. More recent rumors hinted at a June 3 PS5 event. Early rumors hinted that Sony would be unveiling an entire "slate of games" on June 4.

Tune into the PS5's "The Future of Gaming" event on June 4 at 1:00 pm PT via official PlayStation streaming options on Twitch and Youtube.
