When the PlayStation 5 first launched, it did so with only one color for the console and one color for the DualSense controller - white. With the PlayStation 2, 3, and 4 being primarily black consoles with controllers to match, some PlayStation fans weren't thrilled with the color selections that the PS5 offered at launch. However, since the PS5 launched in November 2020, Sony has expanded its horizons by releasing a variety of new DualSense controller colors.
The first new PS5 DualSense controller colors came in the middle of last year when Sony released the Cosmic Red and Midnight Black DualSense controllers, giving PlayStation gamers a little more variety. Now Sony has expanded the PS5 DualSense controller lineup even further, releasing three new colors for PlayStation gamers to add to their collection.
Starting January 14 through PlayStation Direct, PS5 gamers can purchase the Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, and Nova Pink DualSense controllers. Each new PS5 DualSense controller costs $74.99, which some may think is pretty steep for a controller, though it's worth pointing out that the DualSense does have some added bells and whistles traditional controllers lack. For example, the DualSense has unique haptic feedback capabilities, not to mention adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone, and more, hence why it's slightly more expensive than other controllers.
Right now the Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, and Nova Pink PS5 DualSense controller colors are only available through PlayStation Direct, but they will eventually make their way to other retailers. Those that want to buy one of these new PS5 controller colors in-store will have the chance to do so starting February 11, 2022.
PlayStation Direct, for the uninitiated, is a site where PlayStation gamers can purchase products directly from Sony itself. PlayStation Direct is notable for being one of the more reliable ways for one to get their hands on a PS5 console as well, as potential customers have to receive an invitation to queue up for a PS5. This makes it much more difficult for scalpers and automated bots to cheat the system and buy up all the available PS5 stock.
As the year marches on, it should become increasingly easier for fans to get a PlayStation 5 console for themselves. The current hope is that PS5 supply shortages should be mostly resolved by 2023, though there are a number of factors that could prevent that from happening, and so fans should keep that in mind.
