Fans have been calling for alternative colors for the PlayStation 5 since its release. Because there’s been no official word from Sony on if and when that might be happening, some PS5 owners have been making their own custom-colored editions of the console.

Posted to the subreddit r/PlayStation, user u/Mundane-Baseball showed off their custom red PlayStation 5. Although not pictured together, the red color looks very similar to the recently released Cosmic Red DualSense controllers available for the console and the two would make a great pair, if officially sold.

In addition to the deep red coloring that Mundane-Baseball gave the PS5’s faceplate, they also modified the center black strip of the console’s body to look like it was made out of carbon fiber. Linking to the online storefront that sold it, the carbon fiber look is actually nothing more than a sticker-like decal available through a custom shop.

With the ever-growing number of custom PS5 paint jobs and the fact that the console’s faceplates are made to come off, it seems as if it’s just a matter of time until Sony announces officially licensed colored faceplates of their own. While nothing is set and stone, it seems like red and black plates, mirroring the red and black DualSense varieties might be somewhere close on the horizon.

If Sony was to announce a red PlayStation 5 variant, it would likely look very similar to Mundane-Baseball’s. The mat red color on the custom PS5 matched the mat white on the base models almost exactly, so it’s easy to imagine that something official might look similar. The only difference between the two would be the carbon fiber decal in the center.

PlayStation 5s have been notoriously hard to purchase due to various factors including the global chip shortages, so it’s likely that Sony might wait to announce possible color variants until PS5’s are more widely available. Until then, the company will likely continue cracking down on third-party faceplate sellers, which it’s been doing since before the official launch of the system.

Plenty of online retailers are selling custom PS5 faceplates regardless, so for those not wanting to wait for official customization options, the option is definitely there. Another option is to color the faceplates at home for a much more personal touch. There are currently no officially announced plans for Sony to sell colored PlayStation 5 faceplates other than the mat white version.
