While most people's attentions were focused on the new game announcements and updates from E3 2021, they were a couple of new hardware announcements as well. Specifically, Turtle Beach, which has so far mostly been responsible for creating gaming headsets, announced that it would begin producing its own line of third-party controllers. It has already unveiled two of these controllers for PC and the Xbox consoles, and the company would like to expand into making PlayStation 5 controllers too. But that all depends on Sony.

Speaking with MP1st, Turtle Beach explained that its decision to enter the controller market was made with the intention of having controllers on multiple platforms. If it were to make PS5 controllers, the company would require access to the DualSense technology, which is proprietary to Sony. Basically, Sony needs to be ready and willing to share that tech with Turtle Beach. And while it doesn't sound like Turtle Beach have been outright rejected, it isn't able to make any concrete promises about being able to produce PS5 controllers.

"We certainly made this big of a move with the intent of having controllers for multiple platforms. Right now, the DualSense tech is proprietary to Sony. Given the accolades of the tech you have to weigh entry with or without it along with a firm understanding of Sony’s plans for keeping it proprietary…we’ll see."

For the time being, what Turtle Beach can promise prospective customers are its Recon Controller and VelocityOne Flight Simulation Control System. The former, for the most part, greatly resembles an Xbox controller and will be compatible with PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Its main features, however, are that its compatible with gaming headsets (and not just Turtle Beach's) and it has a little control center at the top that provides easy access for audio adjustment. It even offers something called Superman Hearing, amplifying sound effects such as footsteps and weapon reloads. It releases this summer for $60, the same price as a regular Xbox controller.

As for the latter, its a peripheral specifically made for Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is available on PC and releasing for Xbox Series X/S next month. It's very much meant to resemble the kind of controller found in an aircraft and was even designed in collaboration with aeronautical engineers and pilots, no doubt to make it as authentic as possible. It'll also release this summer but it's much more expensive than the Recon Controller, costing $350.

The concept of unique peripherals for the PS5 is certainly appealing. For example, in the past there have been steering wheel controllers made for driving games. And with Gran Turismo 7 in development, something similar for the PS5 is a no-brainer, and it boasting DualSense features would be incredible. But it wouldn't be surprising for Sony to keep its DualSense tech firmly under wraps and keep it entirely to itself.
