Development of the PlayStation 5 and its DualShock 5 controller continues to move forward and as a result, many details are leaking to the public. Yet another patent related to the DualShock 5 controller has revealed a previously unknown, but interesting feature. Specifically, it relates to the Dualshock 5's upgraded haptic feedback system, developer customization, and how in the PS5-era users will have deeper control over controller vibrations, too.

The patent in question details the DualShock 5's "vibration control apparatus," which is the hardware within the controller that manages its vibration levels. It describes a process in which the device is able to "correct" vibration instructions received from the game that's currently being played. In other words, a game sends a message to the controller regarding how it should vibrate, with the controller being able to filter and correct this message. It won't simply be a matter of having the DualShock 5's vibration on or off.

The exciting part of the PlayStation patent requires a bit of reading between the lines. Since they patent makes clear that it doesn't simply have a switch for users to turn controller vibration on and off, or in the patent's words, it features the ability for "correcting the content of the received vibration instructions ...  determined in accordance with a user using the vibration device,"  the implication is that DualShock 5 users can customize their vibration settings.

It needs to be made clear that the patent is intended for technical usage and doesn't provide any further details that a customer might be able to draw conclusions from. It's also possible that this patent won't be used and that the DualShock 5 will rely on past DualShock technology. In other words, until Sony provides official confirmation regarding the DualShock 5's features, it's best to retain a healthy amount of skepticism about its potential.
