A new Sony patent may reveal some rather surprising new features for the PlayStation 5's DualShock 5 controller. According to the patent, the controller could use "biofeedback" to "modify user experience," with data collected from players' hands while they are playing games.

The patent details the DualShock 5's grips, which will track sweat and heart-rate. The PS5 will then "modify user experience" based on this information. Examples aren't given, but in the past, there have been suggestions that such technology could be used to make a game easier if it's too stressful or in the case of a horror game, ramp up the scares if the player's heart-rate isn't responding accordingly.

While Sony's newly discovered controller patent doesn't provide any specific examples of what the PS5 will use this technology for, it does say that it could work with virtual reality headsets and the PlayStation Camera. However, reports have indicated that the rumored PS5 camera feature has been canceled due to component supply shortage, so it's unclear how that may impact the DualShock 5's biofeedback sensors.

It should be noted that while Sony has indeed filed a patent for this technology to be used the PS5's DualShock 5 controller, that doesn't mean it will ever actually materialize for consumer purchase. Tech companies file patents all the time that don't make it to store shelves, and so it's possible that the DualShock 5 won't actually have biofeedback sensors.

In the meantime, there have been many other reports about what the PS5 will entail when it comes to controllers. This includes special triggers that will make things like climbing in video games more immersive, as well as backward compatibility with the DualShock 4. However, none of this has been confirmed by Sony at the time of this writing, and fans should take all information about the PS5 and its DualShock 5 controller with a grain of salt until an official reveal takes place.

As for when that may happen, it's hard to say. Previous rumors pegged the PS5 reveal date for some time in February, but that seems highly unlikely at this point. The new prevailing theory is that the PS5 reveal event will happen in March, but that remains to be seen as well. Fans will just have to stay tuned for more information.
