Sony's sudden decision to unveil the PlayStation 5's new controller, the DualSense, this past Tuesday shocked many fans. Few expected such a major reveal without any teasers or build-up. The fact that the DualSense is a major design shift from the DualShock controller series was perhaps even more shocking. But it took just hours for PlayStation fans to begin experimenting with DualSense color customization.

It turns out that the DualSense's design lends itself to astonishing creativity. The PS5 controller has clear sections, panels that can feature a mix of different colors. They work for simple color styles or complex pieces of art. Sony definitely seems to be onto something with its PS5 DualSense controller design.

Some of the best designs being shared so far are ideas for limited edition DualSense controllers for specific games. For example, there's a Spider-Man controller that's a mix of red and blue with white buttons. The Spider-Man logo is placed at the center of the touchpad. A similar God of War logo has a mix of red and white, like Kratos' ash-covered skin and tattoo. Again, the logo, God of War's omega symbol, placed at the center of the touchpad.

Designers are also having fun with the DualSense's design. Its two sides can be colored red and blue to make it look like a Nintendo Switch product. Another artist colored the DualSense pink and put Majin Buu from Dragon Ball Z's face on the touchpad. For those brave enough to look for them, there are also plenty of examples of the DualSense being turned into an anime girl.

For the most part, however, players are just customizing the DualSense with their favorite colors like how the Xbox Design Lab allows users to make custom Xbox One controllers. Sometimes gamers just want a controller with their favorite color or the colors of their favorite football or basketball team. Hopefully, that's something Sony can offer PS5 players.

The PS5 won't launch until the 2020 holiday season. It's going to be some time before prospective PS5 buyers learn whether they'll be able to purchase customizable DualSense controllers like how Xbox offers custom Xbox One controllers. However, Sony debuting the DualSense with a simple white controller is perhaps a hint at customization. The controller looks quite like a blank canvas. Sony will hopefully share more information soon.
