It has been six months since Sony released the PlayStation 5, which remains one of the hottest commodities in video games. Despite Sony's announcement that the PS5 is now the fastest-selling console in US history, many are still unable to secure one. Those that did are either lucky to chance upon a unit, or were forced to purchase from third-party resellers at insane prices.
Although stock shortages of the PS5 are expected to continue for the foreseeable future, Sony just announced that the DualSense controllers would be receiving new colors. Starting this June, PS5 players will have the option to purchase either the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red DualSense. Of course, many are probably wondering whether the console itself will be receiving new colors. Unfortunately, the console recolor will likely not happen anytime soon, and here are the reasons why.
The PS5 Remains Out of Stock
The most obvious reason why players shouldn't expect a PS5 recolor anytime soon is because of the simple fact that the console still remains out of stock. Although restocks have been more frequent, Sony is still unable to meet the high demand leaving players disappointed and frustrated. According to Sony, the primary reason why it is unable to ramp up production of the PS5 is due to the global supply shortage of components that are crucial in the manufacturing of the console.
The shortage of the components leading to the slow production of the PS5 sparked rumors that Sony is already looking into redesigning the console itself with a new chip to alleviate supply woes. While Sony hasn't officially confirmed this report, insiders claim that the rumored chip would be cheaper to manufacture, and its difference compared to the existing components that make up a PS5 remains a mystery. While a redesign could be an opportunity for Sony to introduce new colors, this remains highly unlikely given that the company would want to focus on actually meeting demand before focusing on the PS5's aesthetics.
Sony Have Always Released Colored Controllers, But Not Consoles (Excluding Special Editions)
It is worth noting that the only thing that sparked the question of whether the PS5 will get additional colors is because Sony announced two new colors for the DualSense controller. Historically speaking, Sony has always released several variants of its controllers, but they never led to actual recolor of the console itself. Of course, this excludes special edition consoles, given that the PS4 has several. It is worth remembering that the only major recolor the PS4 received is the Glacier White edition, which was initially released as a special bundle with Destiny before the company decided to sell standalone white PS4 consoles due to its popularity.
This is not to say that Sony will never release a different color PS5, especially since design aesthetics continue to change in the electronics industry. Just several weeks ago, Apple announced the return of colored iMacs, and before that, its phones and tablets were also released in several colors. It wouldn't be impossible to see the PS5 to don a Midnight Black or Electric Purple color scheme in the future, but it will probably be years away or at least until Sony figures out how to fix the supply problem.
