The PS5 launched last week on November 12, and players have been getting familiar with their brand new Sony consoles. Unfortunately, the PS5’s launch was not without problems, ranging from hardware issues to user confusion on which settings work best for them.

There also seems to be a bit of confusion regarding how saves work on the PS5 and how players can enable cloud saving on their new consoles. Thankfully, the solution to this problem on PS5 is relatively easy to figure out, and players might not even be aware that it’s already solved for them.

How PS5 Saves Work

Whenever any new console launches, it naturally takes a bit of time for players to learn the ins and outs of all the new features that the console has to offer. The PS5 is no exception, as there are plenty of users online who are trying to find help to some of their PS5-related issues. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources out there to help those players like PlayStation’s recent PS5 settings video or guides like this one. One issue many players are having trouble figuring out is how to turn cloud saves on in the PS5 settings menu.

As it turns out, PS5 cloud saving is kind of turned on by default in each console. Essentially, all PS5 games upload save files to cloud storage automatically as players play through them. Should players want to check and make sure that their save data is automatically uploaded to the cloud, simply head to the “Settings” menu, find “Saved Data and Game/App Settings,” then “Save Data (PS5),” and then “Cloud Storage.” Players can then select the “Download to Console Storage” option to see which save files are uploaded to the cloud.

PS4 Games on PS5

However, PS4 games being played on PS5 are a bit of a different story when it comes to cloud saving. No doubt, many players are going to transfer PS4 save data to their PS5 consoles as soon as possible, especially for their favorite games. Those players should be aware that when playing PS4 games on PS5, those games may not automatically upload their save data to the cloud, like a PS5 title would. To check if where certain PS4 save data is going, players need to go to the same “Save Data and Game/App Settings” mentioned above, but this time check for “Save Data (PS4).”

In this section, players will find the option to enable auto-upload for PS4 games directly to the cloud. Players can also decide if they want all of their PS4 game saves to upload to the cloud, or manually select the games they wish to upload. Seeing as PS5’s backward compatibility supports an overwhelming majority of PS4 titles, there will be a lot of save files to manage. In that case, players should simply go through and manage their PS4 cloud saves manually.
