The PlayStation 5 has been ranked among the top 100 best inventions in Time magazine's annual best inventions list for 2020.

The annual list, which praises technological advancements and achievements, praises the PlayStation 5 for its fast load times, high end graphics, and the new innovative DualSense controller.

While much praise was given to the console itself, the DualSense controller was a major focus with the magazine outlining the many new features the controller brings. The controller provides players with some unique ways to interact with games such as the use of haptic feedback on the DualSense to feel surface areas a character is walking on or nearby activity such as vehicles driving by or strong winds.

Oddly absent was Microsoft's newly released Xbox Series X while Time magazine did list the design of Xbox Series S this year, praising the small machine for its next gen capabilities. The criteria for this years list according to the magazine were based on several factors including creativity, effectiveness, and ambition. Some other gaming related products on the list include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Nvidia GeForce Now, and the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit.

While the new innovations of the PlayStation 5 are receiving high praise, the launch of the console has not come without some issues. Some users are reporting hard crashes when the PlayStation 5 is put in rest mode and while not outright bricking the console it has had some dire impacts on use of the feature. Other users are reporting heating issues and save file corruption. It's worth noting that launch consoles tend to have unexpected issues that are typically resolved with patch updates or new iterations of a console.

The PlayStation 5's heating issues for some users are particularly odd given the design of the console. When the console was unveiled earlier in the summer, many fans were surprised by the PlayStation 5's odd shape and size which Sony announced was intentional for aesthetic and functional purposes. The wing design of the console is set to address heating and Sony highlighted the fan design in a breakdown video of the PlayStation 5 earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Sony's recent firmware update for the PlayStation 5 finally brings a feature many fans were anticipating with the addition of Variable Refresh Rates. VRR will provide a cleaner look to games for those who have a TV that support the feature, the addition of Variable Refresh Rates will mean less screen tearing in games.

The PlayStation 5 is available now.
