The eighth generation of consoles will soon officially end as the next generation of hardware ushers in new and exciting gaming experiences including achievement and trophy enhancements. While PlayStation's trophy leveling system has recently undergone a revamp, some players are using the last two weeks of the PlayStation 4 to give it a proper sendoff with a farewell trophy. One such person is PS4 and PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny who said goodbye to the hardware he helped design with a tough platinum.
Cerny posted a tweet showing off an amazing feat along with a sweet sentiment ahead of the next-gen launch. In his tweet, Cerny uploaded a PlayStation 4 screen capture displaying his recently achieved Cuphead platinum trophy. He opens the tweet by calling the impressive display of platforming skill an "adrenaline rush" before thanking Cuphead developers Chad, Jared, and Maja Moldenhauer at Studio MDHR.
In his thank you message, Cerny appreciated the studio for allowing him to finish out his "PS4 journey in style." Cerny ended the tweet saying that achieving the ultra-rare platinum trophy for Cuphead would require some recovery time. As Cerny points out in the tweet, he luckily has two weeks to rest up until the PlayStation 5 officially releases on November 12 in major territories.
While the Cuphead platinum is an impressive way to bid farewell to the PlayStation 4, it is by no means that last PlayStation 4 trophy Cerny is ever going to earn. Thanks to the PlayStation 5's expansive backwards compatibility, the man behind the console's hardware will likely be utilizing the feature for years to come. With over 99 percent of all PlayStation 4 games compatible with the PlayStation 5, and with only 10 games confirmed to not be backwards compatible, there is still ample opportunity to get those lingering PlayStation 4 trophies.
While some might think it's a cute way for the hardware designer to say goodbye, it actually lines up with how Cerny uses Twitter. Cerny rarely tweets but when he does, it is to show off a shiny new platinum while giving thanks to the studios behind the games. His last tweet before his farewell message comes from July of 2019, likely due to Sony's tech architect currently working hard in the leadup to the PlayStation 5 launch. Thus, with just two weeks until the new hardware hits, his Cuphead platinum is a great sendoff gesture.
So with just a fortnight until players can finally experience the next generation of PlayStation, those looking to follow Cerny's lead should act fast for those platinum trophies. At least for most gamers, the first platinum they are going to get on the PlayStation 5 will likely be for a current-gen title. With a CD Projekt Red employee already getting the Cyberpunk 2077 platinum, fans will take the chance to make it their first virtual reward on new hardware.
