The latest major update for the PlayStation 4 is finally available today, however, it's far from perfect as it's causing a laundry list of issues for some PS4 owners. While it's meant to bring the consoles up to speed with their current-gen PS5 counterparts, it seems like the update is doing more harm than good in some cases.

The 9.00 PlayStation 4 update is mainly about connecting the PS4 and the PS5 together by allowing players to view their PS5 trophies on their PS4. Players are also able to delete message groups if they're the owners and PS4 remote play now works using cellular data instead of requiring a WiFi connection.

While all of that sounds great, many PS4 owners have been reporting issues with the 9.00 update. Many console owners on the sub-Reddit r/PS4 have reported that their consoles have come out of the update running extremely slowly. Some have even reported that their consoles have completely bricked themselves as a result and are entirely unusable.

Fans in one Reddit thread have been trying to find a correlation between which edition PS4s are having issues, but it seems like there isn't any PS4 model that's having more trouble than others and that it's random for which consoles might struggle with the update. It's also worth noting that many console owners haven't had any issues with the 9.00 update.

It might not be ideal, but fans wanting to play it safe might want to wait on installing the 9.00 update until Sony addresses the issues. There hasn't been any official word from the company on when fans might expect a fix, but hopefully, one comes soon. That said, it seems like most PS4 consoles are fine following the update, so issues aren't a guarantee, but look out for any abnormalities with the system when using it for the first time after the update has been installed.

The thought of a bricked console is definitely a scary one as getting new hardware is pretty tricky right now. It's no secret that stock for the PS5 and Xbox Series X has been fleeting at best as a result of the ongoing chip shortage, but consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One are also hard to find. Between hardware part shortages and the increased interest in gaming as a result of the ongoing global pandemic, it wouldn't be ideal to be out of a console right now.
