It was only eight days ago that PlayStation 4 owners received a new firmware update in PS4 update 7.01. However, Sony has just released yet another firmware update, 7.02, and many players are likely wondering exactly what this new update does.

Given the short amount of time since the last update, it won't come as a big surprise that this new update is a bit sparse in terms of content, with Sony’s notes merely stating that 7.02 “improves system performance.” No explanation is given as to why a new PS4 update is being released so soon after 7.01, but this is likely being done to either adjust things behind the scenes or smooth out unforeseen wrinkles brought on by last week's update.

Putting aside its lack of any tangible new features, users shouldn’t wait to download the update, as the latest updates are required to access the PS4’s network features, including online multiplayer. On the plus side, 7.02 is only 469.7 MB, so downloading it should only take a few minutes at the most, and for those who keep their PS4s in rest mode and have turned on automatic updates, it’s likely that the update has already been downloaded. That said, users are going to want to check in the system settings just to be sure.

While this is hardly the most interesting update the PS4 has ever seen, the console has received some exciting additions from Sony as of late. The most recent of these exciting additions was in October’s 7.0 update, which brought multiple quality-of-life improvements to the PS4’s Party chat system, made improvements to Remote Play functionality on iOS devices, and added Remote Play support for Android users.

There’s currently no ETA for when PS4 users can expect another update of that size, or in general, but in light of 7.02’s sudden existence, we can’t rule out the possibility of a 7.03 update arriving before year’s end. There’s always room for new features and improvements, and with the PlayStation 5 slated to succeed the PS4 next year, a few solid updates could really help keep the PlayStation 4, one of the most successful consoles ever, relevant for a good while into the next console generation.
