After topping January 2017 in console sales, Sony Interactive Entertainment's PS4 is officially the top-selling system for February of this year, beating out its primary competition in Microsoft's Xbox One. With this being the case, the Sony console has now extended its sales streak by being the best-selling console for four months in a row.

According to data from the industry-tracking firm known as the The NPD Group, the PS4 outperformed the Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U to take the highest spot on the top of the hardware sales charts. At the time of writing, however, no specific figures have been published to denote exactly how many Sony systems were sold last month to give it the edge against its competition.

Nevertheless, with the PlayStation 4 becoming the best-selling console for yet another month, it seems as if the system could be well on its way to fulfilling estimations that it is to double Xbox One sales by 2019. Of course, since Microsoft doesn't publicly announce any concrete figures related to sales of its consoles, it will be difficult to determine whether or not such a feat has been accomplished.

One reason as to why PlayStation 4 has triumphed once more in console sales could be due to certain system exclusives unavailable to other platforms. For instance, not only was Team Ninja's action-RPG Nioh considered by many to be a spectacular experience, but also the recently released open world adventure Horizon: Zero Dawn could have driven many gamers to pick up the console, as the Guerrilla Games title was well-received by nearly every outlet imaginable.

Taking all of this into consideration, while the PlayStation 4 reigns supreme in console sales at the moment, it will be extremely interesting to see how the system fares after March closes out, as both Sony and Microsoft have fresh competition with the Nintendo Switch. After all, the Switch has already been praised by GameStop as having the "strongest console launch in years," so it's quite possible for the Big N's latest system to push the PS4 into the number two slot by debuting at the top of the charts for its first month of availability.

The PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro are available now.
