As many gamers are likely aware, the PS4 had a stellar 2018 thanks to the slew of exclusive titles that released on the system, with games such as God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man taking the top spot on many critics' year-end best-of lists. Now, it looks as if there's even more evidence that Sony Interactive Entertainment's current generation console is dominating the marketplace, as the tech firm has now officially revealed that its latest gaming system has sold through over 91.6 million units worldwide.

According to Sony, the PS4 was able to sell through over 5.6 million units during the 2018 holiday season, which managed to push its sales figures well beyond the 90 million mark. What's more is that the tech firm revealed that more than 50.7 million games were sold for the platform around the world during last year's holidays, bringing lifetime physical and digital software sales for the console to 876 million units.

Without a doubt, this latest sales feat for the PS4 was assisted by Sony's decision to couple the PS4 Slim with Marvel's Spider-Man as a bundle and sell them together for $200 during the 2018 holiday season, which resulted in the package practically soaring off the shelves. As it so happens, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, said a couple of years ago that the superhero exclusive for PS4 could spur the system to sell 100 million units, and his statement doesn't appear to be too far off the mark.

All things considered, even though the PS4's sales remain strong, many gamers are turning their attention toward the next generation of Sony's hardware, especially after one analyst recently surmised that the PS5 will feature backward compatibility. Should this occur, then it would certainly act as a great selling point, as backward compatibility has been a feature that Microsoft has been able to promote in Xbox One without Sony being able to effectively counter with the PS4.
