It’s the beginning of a new month, and the PlayStation Store has already revealed its top selling games for July. This time around, Ghost of Tsushima dominated the charts, several franchise titles continued their stay, and a few smaller titles got a chance to shine.
The fact that Ghost Tsushima claimed the top spot in both the U.S. and E.U. markets is likely to surprise no one. Sucker Punch’s historical open-world epic released in the middle of the month to rave reviews from critics and fans. Additionally, Ghost of Tsushima shattered sales records, moving more than 2.4 million copies around the world in the three days after it dropped. While it's already been more than three weeks since Ghost of Tsushima released, fans are still finding new things to do.
While Ghost of Tsushima topped the chart, several PlayStation Store mainstays held onto their spots. Minecraft was the second-most downloaded game in July, followed by Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Despite releasing at the end of the last generation of consoles, Grand theft Auto 5 has managed to compete with the latest games and is still immensely popular on the PlayStation Store. Publisher Take-Two Interactive recently made a deal with the Epic Games Store to sell a record number of copies of the game in the last quarter.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us 2, which dominated the charts in June, was bumped down to the fifth spot in July. Despite time and controversies surrounding the game’s ending, The Last of Us 2 is still going strong.
EA Sports games have always been popular on the PlayStation charts, and July was no exception. Madden NFL 20 came in at 11, EA Sports FIFA came in at 13, and MLB The Show 20 came in at 20. It’s probable that fans are quenching their excitement for the next Madden game, which recently revealed a new game mode and X-Factor abilities, by revisiting the last franchise’s last installment.
While The PlayStation charts are typically filled with franchise blockbusters and sports titles, smaller games are still able to shine every now and then. This month it was The Forest, a survival-horror game developed by Endnight Games that officially relapsed in 2019 after years in early access.
When it comes to VR games, Marvel’s Iron Man VR took the top spot after the game received generally positive reviews.
