The PS5 and the DualSense controller are on the rise, but some fans still seem to prefer the PS4 and its DualShock controller. One PS4 user with some modder's sensibilities is showing off a custom DualShock 4 controller that features brightly glowing buttons.

Redditor Sam_Under_Ice put together this custom controller using a kit they found online. The controller itself appears to be a dull grey color, but both keypads seem to be glowing bright yellow. The result is a luminous controller, excellent for playing video games in dark rooms, though it might not be surprising to hear that the customization didn't help the battery life.

Sam_Under_Ice admitted that the light is a bit bright for comfort and they have been considering adding a light coat of headlight lens tint spray paint to tone down the glare. They also mentioned the possibility of putting a resister in line, but after some consideration decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Reportedly, the mod chip is pretty cheaply made, the wires are not the best quality, and it's all packed in there pretty tightly, which would likely make further DualShock 4 modifications very difficult.

According to the modder, the light isn't as distracting as one might think--while it's certainly striking to an observer, it's not really noticeable once the user has started gaming with it. Sam_Under_Ice has expressed a desire to tone down the brightness to more of a soft backlight, but third party modchips can only do so much. Apparently, they got into gaming mods with shell replacements, which are relatively easy, and are now branching out. It appears they have more of a customization history with handhelds than the DualShock controller, though this foray into controller modding came out very striking.

As of writing, the custom has a very divided reception on Reddit, with some users being blown away by the mod and others criticizing it heavily. Many have expressed interest in the glowing buttons effect, though just as many have claimed they wouldn't use it themselves unless the brightness could be dimmed. One person was so taken by Sam_Under_Ice's work they asked how the modder got into the field. Another user mentioned being afraid to open their controller to remove some dust and received step-by-step instructions from Sam_Under_Ice on how to do it. While the DualShock 4 won't work with PS5 games, the controller--and the PS4 console--still have their fans, especially in the modding community.
