About a couple of months ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation 4 console surpassed more than 79 million units sold since it hit store shelves back in 2013, and it definitely seems as if its dominance in the marketplace continues unabated. The American market research company known as The NPD Group has now officially declared that the PS4 has managed to become May 2018's best-selling console.

While the PS4 took the crown for last month's best-selling console, 2018 as a whole saw hardware growth that included "all-time unit sales highs for a May month," with last month also having the best hardware sales for May overall since 2011. As such, these financial successes for Sony and its competitors in the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One will hopefully indicate an even larger upswing in sales for gaming hardware moving forward.

Although PS4 has been dubbed May 2018's best-selling console, it was a Microsoft exclusive that was the most purchased piece of software last month. As it so happens, Undead Labs' zombie survival title, State of Decay 2, bested the likes of such PlayStation 4 exclusives as God of War and Detroit: Become Human to take the top spot on the video game charts for May. This is an especially noteworthy feat, especially when one considers how the PC and Xbox One title is also available in the Xbox Game Pass.

Taking all of this into account, it will be interesting to see how high the sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 hit during this current generation, as Sony certainly exhibited big plans for the system's future during the company's E3 2018 press conference. In fact, many would agree that the company's showcase was the major highlight of this year's expo, as the tech firm showed off a sizeable amount of exciting exclusives on the way that will certainly buoy PS4 sales well into the future.
