PlayStation users will have to deal with the digital store closures for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita in the coming months. While users are rushing to purchase all the games they can from these PlayStation platforms before the respective stores close, there is an important piece of information that should be taken into account involving the use of PS Plus on older platforms.

PlayStation Plus was first made available on the PS3 and PS Vita back in June of 2010 as a way for players to enjoy online gaming services and receive free games. Since that time, the online service has been featured on every PlayStation platform to release after the PS3 and PS Vita. Though, the upcoming store closures on certain PlayStation platforms may prove troublesome for PS Plus subscribers.

Users will be able to retain the games they downloaded via PS Plus on either the PS3, the PSP, or the PS Vita, but if the subscription lapses after the storefronts shut down, users won't be able to play those games ever again. Unless, of course, the users re-subscribe to PS Plus, but considering the lack of online presence from other users on those platforms, it doesn't make too much sense to have PS Plus on any of these older systems.

However, there is a workaround to this little problem. If the PS Plus subscription lapses before the stores shut down, then users can buy the games before the PlayStation stores shut down. Sadly, there's no way for users to cancel their subscription other than to turn off auto-renew, so if the auto-renewal date falls after the stores shut down, there's no way for players to purchase the games they downloaded via PS Plus.

While this may seem like a pretty big oversight, it's important to keep in mind that each of these systems are several years old. The PS Vita may be the youngest system comparatively, given that it was released in 2011, both the PS3 and the PSP released in the mid-2000s and are over ten years old. Sony has since made much greater strides in terms of accessibility on newer systems that older systems just don't possess.

Hopefully, this doesn't cause too many issues for players. Every user situation is different, but now players will be able to safeguard their games on older platforms. That being said, players will have to act fast if they want to get any additional games on either system. Quite a lot of PS1 games will be made unavailable once the stores shut down, so it's important for PlayStation users to use their time wisely.
