The PS2 is a game console that remains a personal favorite for many gaming fans to this day. However, in all the time since the PS2 became outdated, there have been surprisingly few remakes of games from that time. Many games that were released on the PS2 are over twenty years old now, and despite excellent plots and mechanics, they require updates.

With so many classic game remakes doing huge numbers today, it may be only a matter of time before some of these games are remade at last. But games that were ahead of their time may need fan assistance in getting enough support for a remake.

6 Silent Hill 2

A Warning From Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 wasn’t actually originally released for the PS2. Instead, it was fully released in a collected edition with all the extra content on the PS2 and was considered an excellent game by critics and fans alike. Set in the namesake town, the game follows a widower that receives a letter from his dead wife telling him that she waits for him in Silent Hill.

The creepy atmosphere and incredible gameplay of Silent Hill 2 could be easily updated for a modern version of the game. With similar survival-horror games like Resident Evil finding huge success in recent remakes, it is likely that such a great game could find similar success. New Silent Hill projects have been talked about recently for the first time in years, and a remastering of this hugely successful entry or a collection of several of the early games could act as a prelude release to new games in the franchise.

5 The Simpsons: Hit & Run

The Simpsons: Hit & Run was an ingenious idea to make a more family-friendly game in a similar vein to Grand Theft Auto. While those games focus on more adult violence and even sexual content, Hit & Run dealt with the world of Homer, Marge, and co including all the cartoony violence and nonsensical story a video game can handle.

Hit & Run is still much beloved by fans and would do well with a proper remake or remaster. A sequel, including all the Disney branding that The Simpsons now has at its disposal, could be hugely successful as well. Few other attempts have been made at more inclusive, family-friendly versions of games like GTA, and even fewer have found success doing it.

4 Final Fantasy 10

It is strange that there haven’t been more remakes of Final Fantasy games. The hugely successful franchise saw massive success with the release of a Final Fantasy VII remake in 2010. While there have been previous remakes of other games in the series, an update to Final Fantasy 10 would be a great idea today.

Set in the world of Spira, Final Fantasy 10 or Final Fantasy X has a sweeping story that pits a set of heroes against a powerful, destructive force called Sin. The world of Spira, based upon Southeast Asia, was a huge change from many more European-based worlds that gamers were accustomed to at the time, and it would be an amazing world to see remade in the style of Final Fantasy VII.

3 Lifeline

One of the more unique ideas for a PS2 game ever, Lifeline was a sci-fi game with an incredibly surprising control system. The game was controlled entirely through a microphone, with players giving the in-game characters specific instructions. While this is one of the more unusual methods for the only controls in a game that has ever been attempted, it didn’t always work as well as it needed to at the time to make it a truly great idea.

Twenty years on, however, it is likely that voice activation added to a game on this level could work. Lifeline is about two people trying to survive a mutated outbreak of humans on a space station which occurs due to experimental attempts to recreate the philosopher’s stone. Rio, the character controlled by the voice commands, could already understand 500 commands in the PS2 version, but more could potentially be added in a remake today.

2 Clock Tower 3

The villain grabbing the girl in Clock Tower 3

The Clock Tower games were survival horror featuring point-and-click elements and had stories and enemies reminiscent of the Resident Evil games. While there was no such success initially for the Clock Tower games it is possible that in a world filled with Resident Evil remakes, they could find a new audience.

Clock Tower 3 was the best of the games and managed to bring a great cinematic style of presentation to the series. If utilized well with some new mechanics, a new Clock Tower game or a remake of this entry in the franchise could create huge success. Games in a similar vein to Resident Evil are uncommon, and it would be great to see a new attempt to revive a series that hasn’t been around for a long time.

1 The Thing

The Thing was a legendary John Carpenter film starring Kurt Russell, which took the idea of paranoia and turned it into a visual, cerebral masterpiece. The game, released in 2002, acted as a sequel to the film and was more of a third-person shooter. However, this could be rectified in a remake as there is a huge opportunity with this game.

With the success of other paranoia games such as Among Us recently, and the successful game adaptions of horror films such as Friday the 13th and Alien, a new The Thing game could work out fantastically. With a multiplayer feature where one of the players is the creature, this game could find truly major success today.
