The original PlayStation is popular game console with a vast library of excellent games. With such an immense number to choose from, PlayStation fans have begun a discussion on what titles they would like to have in their dream PS1 game collection.

The PlayStation was first released in Japan in 1994 before launching in the rest of the world in 1995. This was Sony’s first foray into the gaming console space after having plans fall through with Nintendo on a co-developed console, and it was an incredibly successful one. Featuring true 3D graphics, a CD-ROM drive, and pioneering the modern dual-analog game controller as we know it today with the Dualshock, the PlayStation sold over 102 million units before finally being retired in 2006. With such an extensive lifespan that led to over 7,000 total games being available, players can see why it would be extremely difficult to try and pick their favorite titles, many of which never received a proper sequel on any PlayStation.

YouTuber AlphaOmegaSin has posted a challenge on his page in which he asks players to build their dream PS1 game collection, but there is a catch: the 25 games available to choose from in the post are broken up into price tiers ranging from $1-$5, and participants are given only $15 to make their choices. Some games available for selection are PlayStation classics like Metal Gear SolidGran Turismo 2, and Final Fantasy 7. The post has gathered plenty of steam on Twitter, with over 3,000 likes and 400 retweets as of writing.

Nostalgia, particularly in the gaming-sphere, is a very powerful thing. Players always seem to enjoy looking back on their favorite past titles fondly. With Sony’s PlayStation console being such an impressive machine for the Japan-based company, many gamers all across the world view the PS1 and its classic game library in a very positive light. As such, it’s easy to see why a simple post regarding players' dream PS1 game collection has caught on so quickly.

Of course, there are many other lovingly-remembered game consoles like the Sega Dreamcast or the Nintendo GameCube, but few have been as successful as the original Sony PlayStation in terms of sales. The PS1 is fifth overall in total sales if one includes handheld systems, and second only to its direct successor, the PlayStation 2, if only counting home consoles. While Sony has had some hits and misses over the years with their PlayStation ecosystem, their latest console the PlayStation 5, seems to be off to a promising start since its release last November. Time will tell if the PS5 will have the same lasting following that the classic PlayStation system enjoys today.
