Sony has been teasing gamers with details of the upcoming PS VR2, as the revealed hardware specs have shown that PS VR2 will likely be a game-changer. It will sport an OLED display featuring 2000x2040 panel resolution per eye, adjustable lenses, and approximately 110 degrees field of view. The device will also include a built-in motor with vibrations that mimic in-game sensations to increase immersion. For the benefit of PS5 owners, PS VR2 headsets have also been designed to visually pair up nicely with their console counterparts.

Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and president Jim Ryan gave an investor presentation where he provided a glimpse into the current performance of Sony's gaming division and the company's plans for the future. During the presentation, he highlighted how PlayStation has expanded thanks to the success of the PS5 and the company's constant acquisitions which have raised the number of its first-party studios. He also shed light on the anticipated launch of PS VR2 as well as what gamers can expect and, fortunately, there are plenty of reasons to be excited.

There Are at Least 20 Confirmed Games

During the presentation, PS VR2's previously revealed hardware specs were confirmed, which include 4K HDR, enhanced controls tracking, and foveated rendering, a process that optimizes efficiency by using an eye tracker to increase image resolution where the wearer is looking and reduce image resolution in the player's peripheral vision. PS VR2 will also be more convenient to use than its predecessor thanks to its single-cord setup.

No launch is complete without a nice library of games for players to jump into. Ryan confirmed that PS VR2 will launch with at least twenty games. Ryan did not confirm PS VR2's release date, though with the device revealed, many have speculated that it may hit stores during 2022's holiday season. However, due to supply issues that have been plaguing the tech industry for over a year, others have suggested that it may only launch in 2023.

Having a strong launch lineup will help ensure the headset hits the markets with a running start, especially when there are still questions surrounding the device's background compatibility. While full backward compatibility with the PS VR library would be nice, many games make use of peripherals such as the PlayStation Move controllers which may make them incompatible with the PS VR2. Gamers should not bemoan losing the PlayStation Move controllers, however, as PS VR2 is replacing them with new controllers that incorporate several of the DualSense's features including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. This also includes new immersive features, including finger touch detection and an ergonomic orb shape designed for comfort.

What PS VR2 Games Have Been Confirmed?

Horizon Call off the Mountain Keyart

Gamers have gotten fleeting glimpses of what they can expect from Sony's next generation of VR gaming. Perhaps the biggest game revealed thus far is Horizon Call of the Mountain, which is being developed by Guerrilla Games and Firesprite. The project is being kept under wraps for now, but it has been revealed that although Aloy will be making an appearance, the story will be told through a new character. After the visual splendor that Horizon Forbidden West provided, diving back into Aloy's world in virtual reality is certain to be an extraordinary experience.

Although they have not been confirmed as launch titles, other games set to release on PS VR2 include the popular PC shooter Pavlov, Low-Fi, Samurai Slaughter House, and the Cyan Worlds developed game Firmament. Schell Games, the developer responsible for the upcoming VR ports of Among Us, has also announced that a PS VR2 version of the hit game will be released after the headset launches.

Gamers will get to see more games during Sony's State of Play on June 2, where it has been confirmed that several PS VR2 games in development will be revealed. The stream will be available for viewing on Sony's official YouTube channel and Twitch channel. With a successful PS VR2 launch, Sony can ensure that VR can gain even more mainstream popularity, so it stands to reason the State of Play will go big.
