The summer of 2022 is already shaping up to be a busy one in the world of video games with many different developers and companies revealing different announcements and hosting showcases. In the midst of all of that, PlayStation's new tiers for PlayStation Plus go live today, June 13. The PlayStation Plus subscription service is almost twelve years old and has been in dire need of a refresh to keep up with similar subscription models on the market, especially that of Xbox's Game Pass.To subscribe to the subscription, users need to select a tier and pay as usual on a PS4, PS5, or on a PC browser. The first tier, PlayStation Plus Essential, is the same PlayStation Plus as before. However, the two higher tiers of the service, PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium, include a massive catalog of first and third-party titles, with the Premium tier including many more perks.RELATED: PS Plus Extra and Premium Are Losing a Major GameFans can look forward to more backwards compatibility, a host of games from previous PlayStation consoles to play, exclusive discounts for different games, add-ons and expansions, online multiplayer gaming, and a myriad of other features once they subscribe to PlayStation Plus. The competition of subscription services is a blessing for fans everywhere, as it seems that it fosters the upgrading of said services and ushers in more features and games.

Here is a breakdown of the three subscription tiers:

PlayStation Plus Essential

The first tier costs $9.99/month and grants access to two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saved games, online multiplayer access, share play, game help (PS5 only), and the PlayStation Plus Collection (PS5 only).

PlayStation Plus Extra

The next tier costs $14.99/month and grants all benefits from the Essential tier. In addition, it adds a catalog of up to 400 downloadable PS4 and PS5 games.

PlayStation Plus Premium

The final tier costs $17.99/month and grants all benefits from both previous tiers. In addition, PlayStation Plus Premium adds up to 340 more games from a catalog of PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 titles (the last of which are only available through cloud streaming - the others can be downloaded).

Many PlayStation fans around the world are likely excited about the expanse of features and games coming to the subscription service. Though this is definitely an advantage for players that were already subscribed to PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, as they won't have to change any part of their subscription and will automatically be grandfathered into the Premium tier, all users definitely have more unique and various options of how to participate in the subscription.
