While Xbox Live Gold subscribers are able to claim their monthly free games as soon as the new month starts, PlayStation Plus subscribers have to wait until the first Tuesday of the month, when the PlayStation Store updates. Now that the PlayStation Store has updated, PlayStation Plus subscribers can claim their free PS Plus games for January 2021, which consist of one PS5 title and two PS4 games.

On the PS4 side of things, PS Plus subscribers are able to claim Shadow of the Tomb Raider and GreedFallShadow of the Tomb Raider earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its release, though it wasn't quite as well-received as the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot or Rise of the Tomb RaiderGreedFall, meanwhile, may not be quite as well known as Tomb Raider, but it also earned mostly positive reviews. It's generally considered to be one of the more underrated games of the PS4 generation, having come from the relatively small studio Spiders, known for The Technomancer game.

PlayStation 5 gamers can access both Shadow of the Tomb Raider and GreedFall thanks to the PS5's backward compatibility with PS4. However, PS5 owners also get a third game as well, in the form of ManeaterManeater is a bizarre action RPG where players take on the role of a rampaging shark, and while it earned mixed reviews, it still managed to find an audience.

The road to the free PS Plus games for January 2021 has been a somewhat bumpy one. While the free PS Plus games are usually announced and released without incident, there were a couple of issues this time around. First off, some PS Plus subscribers were upset about Maneater being added to the service, as they had recently just purchased the game, and so Sony issued refunds. Usually fans just have to deal with it if they already purchased a game that gets added to the PS Plus lineup, and it seems unlikely that Sony's going to make a habit out of issuing refunds.

The other issue happened when the free PS Plus games for January 2021 went live on January 5. Many PS4 and PS5 owners were unable to claim the free PS Plus games when they were added, running into an error message when trying to access Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and seeing prices still listed for both GreedFall and Maneater. Luckily, these PS Plus problems were resolved within a matter of hours, and users should now be able to claim and download them at their leisure.

The free PS Plus games for January 2021 will be available until February 1, 2021, at which point they will be replaced by three more games. Two of those games are still a mystery, but it's already been confirmed that one of them will be PS5 exclusive Destruction AllStars. Fans should find out what the other two games are come the last Wednesday of the month, as that's typically when Sony announces the next batch of free PS Plus titles.
