PlayStation VR has provided a solid virtual reality experience for PlayStation users since 2016. In celebration of PlayStation VR's 5th anniversary, Sony will be giving PlayStation Plus members some free PSVR games starting in November 2021.

Virtual reality has for many years been seen as potentially the next step for gaming, but there have been a lot obstacles preventing it from happening. Between really expensive hardware, its system requirements, and generally speaking, a lack of must-play games, VR has yet to really take off. Enter PlayStation VR, Sony's solution to these problems, featuring a decent headset at a fair price with a fair selection of games to play. Earlier this year, Sony confirmed its next PS VR model was in development for use with the PS5, showing off its sleek new controllers.

Sony announced in a new PlayStation Blog post that PlayStation Plus members will be receving three free PS VR games starting in November 2021. Isabelle Tomatis, the Senior Director of PSVR, starts the post saying, "Today marks the fifth anniversary of the day PlayStation VR was introduced to the world, and we want to take this moment to thank all of our fans and our talented development community for embracing this platform and supporting PS VR through the years." They go on to explain that in celebration of this "PS VR milestone," PlayStation will be giving its PS Plus members three "bonus" games beginning in November 2021, with more information coming soon. It seems like these titles will be in addition to the regular monthly free PS Plus games.

The rest of the article is dedicated to reflecting on the PS VR's first five years, with a variety of metrics and statements from developers. According to Tomatis, the most-played PS VR games worldwide are Rec Room, Beat Saber, PlayStation VR Worlds, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim VR, and the terrifying Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. Tomatis even provides a region-specific breakdwon of the most-played games, with other games like like Job Simulator and Firewall: Zero Hour being popular in North America, and Gran Turismo Sport being popular in Japan. Perhaps one or some of these titles will be included in November's game drop.

Some interesting data that is sadly missing from this post are the install base of the PS VR and some actual estimates of playing time spent in some of these games. As great as the provided information is, as well as the upcoming free PS VR games that are being offered, this is clearly a marketing tactic to try and sell PS VRs to those who have yet to adopt the hardware. It has also been some time since any official PlayStation VR 2 news, so perhaps some more information is on the way. The largest question though is what games fans can expect in these monthly PlayStation VR drops.
