The launch of PS Plus Extra and Premium in North America is set for tomorrow, June 13, and fans who are upgrading are going to get a ton of new games to play alongside the PS Plus free games for June 2022. Extra alone gives them a huge library of PS4 and PS5 games, while Premium expands that even more with PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games. Not to mention, there are other bonuses on top of that.

The PS Plus free games for June 2022 are the last slate of games prior to it becoming the Essential tier. Fans know that the PS Plus Essential tier will only be two games from hereon, according to Sony’s tier breakdown, and it stands to reason there could be other changes. What’s concerning out of this lineup, however, may not be the low-rated Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker, but actually the headlining game: God of War.

PS Plus Has God of War Free Everywhere

Fans aren’t generally happy with the PS Plus free games for June 2022, if only because of the lower-rated games, but God of War is a little different. The title is incredibly popular, and with God of War: Ragnarok reportedly releasing in November, returning to the title isn’t a bad idea. Except that it’s available everywhere else, too.

God Of War 2018

PS5 owners are able to access God of War on the PS Plus collection, meaning that the Essential tier's God of War is most likely for PS4 owners. However, if those PS4 owners are just upgrading to the middle Extra tier, one of the games they have access to is God of War. What this essentially means is that giving God of War away as one of the PS Plus free games only appeals to those with a PS4, a PS Plus subscription, no intent on upgrading, and those who don’t own it/have never played it before.

It's an odd situation, but what’s concerning about it is whether it’s a one-off. If Sony uses the Essential Tiers to essentially tease the upgraded tiers, it could mean that fans get free games that are already available on higher tiers at least every now and then. Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, and other PS4/PS5 games are all on PS Plus Extra, and if they’re free there, God of War shows they could be given away on PS Plus Essential eventually. That's not to mention the plethora of non-first-party games there, which are perhaps more likely to be given away on the Essential tier. For those with no intent to upgrade, that's probably a good thing, but for those who are paying more and already have access to those games, it's not likely to go over well.

They would have the same limited appeal at that point, especially if it were like Miles Morales to tease Spider-Man 2’s release. It’s not likely to happen all that often, but it seems safe to say that any month Sony gives away a PS Plus Extra game on PS Plus Essential isn’t going to be popular among those subscribing at a higher level. It does remain to be seen if this happens again, as it’s important that Essential doesn’t change its approach because of Extra and Premium, but ultimately fingers crossed that the PS Plus free games for July 2022 are well-received and more unique.

PS Plus Essential subscribers get a handful of free games every month.
