As of this writing, PS Plus’ formal tier system is just a week and a day away. PS Plus will become split across three new tiers, including PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium. The latter tiers will offer players a huge library of PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS4, and PS5 games, as well as other bonuses like game trials. It even seems some games like Stray will join PS Plus’ tiers on day one.

Day-one games, even if they aren’t PlayStation exclusives, are going to go a long way in making PS Plus more competitive with Xbox Game Pass. Yet, this month is sort of the limbo between the old guard and the new one. PS Plus’ free games for May 2022 will soon be replaced by the new games for June 2022, meaning June 2022 will be the last games operating by the old rules.

When the PS Plus free games for June 2022 are replaced by the July 2022 games, it stands to reason that they’ll be playing by new rules, meaning this is the last month of the old guard. PS Plus subscribers will be able to claim God of War, Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl from June 7 and July 5, but it may be the last month to feature three games.

For North America, the PS Plus tiered system release on June 13. Once the ball is really rolling on it, fans will be hearing about new PS Plus Extra and Premium games around the middle of every month, as revealed by Sony. This means the new games will still be announced near the end/start of a month and release first, with PS Plus Extra and Premium announcements coming midway through the month.

Stray on the higher PS Plus tiers shows how much Sony intends to focus there, but combined with another element, it shows how the new guard will differ from another. It may have flown under many radars, but Sony suggested that the PS Plus free games selection every month will be two games. This no doubt pushes more consumers to the higher tiers, but those wanting the most basic tier are losing the most.

It’s been quite some time since PS Plus just released two free games, but it seems that could very well be the status quo moving forward. This means PS Plus Essential will offer, from July on, one less game than before. If the trade-off means more games for PS Plus Extra and Premium, then it may be a worthwhile change; however, it all ultimately remains to be seen how much the new guard truly changes things around.
