PS Plus is a service that has run the gamut in terms of quality. For a while, it followed a pattern of a big, first-party AAA title and a smaller, more niche title, which found its hits and its misses. Some months, like the infamous May 2020, offered games that resulted in petitions to change the PS Plus games. However, in part it seems to really push the PS5, Sony has been offering games seemingly of higher and higher quality.
That's not to say that every game offered each month is a big game that anyone and everyone would want to download, but that in terms of value and quality, there's more value in each game. It's not necessarily offering a big game and a small game, but a selection of games that anyone would benefit from at least trying. While PS Plus has been going hard the past few months, February 2021 arguably has the widest array of games, and Sony's response in March will be interesting.
PS Plus Free Games for February 2021
PS Plus' February 2021 line-up includes Destruction AllStars, Control: Ultimate Edition, and Concrete Genie. Taken individually, each game has a completely different appeal, what with Destruction AllStars being a multiplayer game, Control being a AAA single-player experience, and Concrete Genie being a small-time PS4 exclusive (with a little VR appeal as well). However, each game here shouldn't be taken individually: each has reason to try it out as part of this month's offering.
Destruction AllStars is brand new and launches on the service. Destruction AllStars reviews haven't been too kind, but it's the type of game many may want to check out. After all, at the very least, it's a free PlayStation exclusive that fans don't have to shell out $60-$70 for. Control, at the same time, is the new and improved Ultimate Edition, which has a ton of upgrades fans who have already played the game may want to check out. And Concrete Genie is a PlayStation exclusive that's easy to sleep on, but one that shouldn't be. In short, this month's games have mass appeal.
PS Plus Free Games for March 2021
The appeal of February's games is going to be a challenge for March. First off, fans already know that Destruction AllStars will remain on the service for another month, just as Bugsnax did before it. It seems likely that April or May will see another 2-month game added on, but just as December still added three new games alongside Bugsnax, March may do the same. In other words, this isn't a hamper, but it's not exactly beneficial either. It could be that the other three games operate independently, still hitting that same high mark Sony has thus far, or it could be that Sony considers that it's still giving away Destruction AllStars and lowers the quality, if only slightly.
Truth is, there will eventually be another May 2020 for PS Plus. The nature of a subscription service means that not every month will knock it out of the park; there's no indication that it'll be March, though. It's possible that March doesn't quite live up to February, however, and that the bigger and bigger Sony goes, the harder the fall may be. March may be that "wind down" month where the games are good, if not great, or it could be yet another chapter in the increased momentum of PS Plus.
It'll be interesting to see how March responds to the inherent challenge set forth by February, but the thing to remember is, even if it pales in comparison to past months, PS Plus is still a premiere service for the PlayStation brand. And if it is, for whatever reason, a disappointing month, that just likely means there's something bigger and better around the corner.
