Sony has revealed the subscriber numbers for PS Plus Extra and Premium in a new report, confirming that a surprising number of users are a member of these higher tiers. PlayStation Plus transitioned into a three-tiered service in June 2022, with the Essential category being the same as the previous model. Members now have an option to upgrade to either Extra or Premium, giving them unique bonuses on top of the basic version of PS Plus.

Users in the Extra tier get access to a huge catalog of PS5 and PS4 games, while Premium members can play select PS1, PS2, and PSP titles and also have the ability to stream PS3 games. PS Plus Premium subscribers can also download time-limited trials for select titles, allowing them to try out these games for a few hours. Now, Sony has revealed that a surprising number of gamers have upgraded to these higher tiers of PS Plus.

In a recently released report, Sony revealed that PlayStation Plus Premium had 8 million subscribers as of March 2023, with PS Plus Extra sitting at 6.1 million. The higher PS Plus tiers now account for 30% of total users, with Sony recently confirming that PlayStation Plus has 47.4 million subscribers across all three tiers. This information came via a Business Segment Meeting, which also offered a ton of interesting data on PlayStation’s market performance.

Carrion becomes the latest game to join PS Plus Premium, coming with a free trial for any players looking to try it out.

Sony confirmed that PS VR2 has sold 600,000 units since its release, an 8% increase over the sales of PS VR during the same period. It also mentioned that the PC version of The Last of Us Part 1 has sold 368,000 copies, with Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered selling over 1.5 million units. Other information in the report is related to Sony’s investment plans for the PlayStation division and key areas for growth.

The new PS Plus tiers launched just a year ago, so it’s impressive for Sony to have achieved such a high percentage of subscribers in this period. While some titles have left PS Plus Extra and Premium, the lineup appears to be steadily improving as Sony adds more first-party games to PS Plus Extra, with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart joining in May 2023. It’ll be interesting to see if the numbers increase or decrease in the future, as it’s possible for some gamers to go back to the Essential tier of PS Plus after trying out Extra or Premium for a month.
