The PS Plus Extra and Premium games are still very much in their fledgling state, and as Sony seemingly experiments with the best tactics, it seems clear that PS Plus should follow more in line with September than August. Indeed, if one compares the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for September 2022 and Sony's approach to there to the August games, it's clear that September's approach is generally better.

Now, it should be noted that Sony surprised subscribers by revealing the PS Plus Extra and Premium games at the same time as the PS Plus free games for September 2022, whereas previous months including August split up the announcements. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but it's not how Sony approached the games in September 2022 it should learn from, but where its focus ultimately was during all of this.

PS Plus Premium Classic Games Can't Get Lost in the Shuffle

With this shift to the PS Plus tier structure, fans are getting more than ever before (if they are subscribed, of course). Sony jumped from giving out 3-4 games a month to ~20/month now. In doing this, it's super important that each subscription tier retains its core identity and September does that well. There's reason to look at EVERY PS Plus subscription tier. The free games are solid, the Extra tier is adding hot games like Deathloop, and there is a strong selection of classic titles for the Premium tier, including the Sly Cooper collection and two PSP games. It is arguably one of the best months of the year.

However, it follows August which did not retain the identity of each tier. The PS Plus Essential and Extra games were solid enough, but there were no classic games given away for PS Plus Premium subscribers in August. That's wild, given this is a monthly subscription and Premium is the most expensive tier. Sure, there are other benefits, but the games are what mark each PS Plus tier. It seems Sony was experimenting with what happens if it doesn't hit the high marks of each tier every month, and sure, there are going to be some months where the Essential tier outshines the other two, the Extra tier outshines the other two, and/or the Premium tier outshines the other two. That's just par for the course.

However, the PS Plus Premium games for August 2022 were non-existent. There wasn't a single game given away for this tier, and that should not be repeated. It's easy enough to see the PS Plus Premium games for September 2022 as an apology, but hopefully, Sony will ensure it represents every tier every month from now on.

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
