Following months of rumors, leaks, and speculation, Sony finally pulled the curtain back on its revamped PlayStation Plus service. Starting sometime in June, Sony will be combining its PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services, offering three different tiers to subscribers. The first new PlayStation Plus tier is PlayStation Plus Essential, which costs the same as the current service and offers the same benefits. Then there's PS Plus Extra ($14.99 per month/$99.99 per year), which adds up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games, and PS Plus Premium ($17.99 per month/$119.99 per year), which adds 340 additional games from the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 generations.

Sony stopped short of revealing all the classic games that will be coming to these new PS Plus tiers, but it did shed some light on some of the bigger blockbuster PS4 and PS5 games that will be available for the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers at launch. In fact, Sony has confirmed six big games that PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers will be able to check out when the service launches in June.

As announced by PlayStation, PS Plus Extra and Premium will include Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal at launch. It was mentioned that these titles will be "regularly refreshed," which indicates that they will be rotated in and out with other games, so subscribers to these new PS Plus tiers should keep that in mind.

  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Returnal

Regardless, that's quite the impressive lineup of games that PS Plus Extra and Premium are launching with, and they should keep subscribers plenty busy. They also seem to be somewhat strategically chosen, as God of War has a sequel coming out this year in the form of God of War: Ragnarok, while Insomniac's next Spider-Man game is expected to drop in 2023. This will make the games more readily available to players, which can in turn create new fans who will be more willing to pick up the next entries in the respective franchises.

It seems that Sony is coming out swinging with PS Plus Extra and Premium, though it remains to be seen if it will be able to effectively compete with Xbox Game Pass. After all, PS Plus will not have day one Sony games, whereas that's one of the main selling points of Game Pass. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens moving forward, and if Sony needs to adjust its strategy at all after launching PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium this coming June.
