Stealth games have had a pretty great history on PlayStation's consoles. From being home to the first Metal Gear Solid, to having a variety of first-party exclusives where stealth is the primary focus of gameplay, PlayStation has always offered a home for stealth games. This trend continues with Sony's latest PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tier system, which offers subscribers hundreds of great titles, some of which are stealth classics.

While PlayStation Plus Extra gives subscribers a plethora of PS4 and PS5 titles, PlayStation Plus Premium offers some PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 classics on top, albeit for an increased fee. Though the current PlayStation Plus tiers aren't brimming with stealth game options, there are a good few highlights in each tier that are certainly worth playing through.

Great Stealth Games on PS Plus Extra

PlayStation Plus' Extra tier gives subscribers access to hundreds of PS4 and PS5 titles, including some big first-party exclusives. One of these first-party exclusives, Ghost of Tsushima, is actually the first recommendation on this list. While Ghost of Tsushima is primarily a third-person, open-world action game that emphasizes deflection, parries, and sword strikes in its combat, a good portion of the game can be played solely via stealth. As Jin Sakai, players will learn to become the titular Ghost of Tsushima, unlocking a variety of speedy stealth takedowns, sneaky archery techniques, and a range of stealth gadgets such as smoke bombs.

Another first-party exclusive offered on PS Plus Extra, The Last of Us is technically a stealth game. Though a player can technically run into battle guns blazing, The Last of Us heavily encourages players to take their time, survey each environment, and sneak through it cautiously. From here, players will be able to stealth takedown a variety of foes, even including the infected. The Last of Us may not seem like a stealth game on the surface, but its core gameplay loop certainly belongs to the stealth genre.

For a variety of different stealth experiences, PS Plus subscribers should turn their attention toward the platform's many Assassin's Creed offerings. PS Plus Extra has just about every Assassin's Creed game in history currently on offer, aside from the first one. Even the side-scrolling Assassin's Creed Chronicles games are currently on PS Plus Extra. While some Assassin's Creed games are a little more action-focused than others, there are plenty of opportunities for stealth across the series, and there's plenty of variation between each entry to make each stand out of its own accord. For those looking to be stealthy swashbucklers, there's Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, and for those looking to sneak around the city streets of Rome, there's the Ezio Collection.

Great Stealth Games on PS Plus Premium Only

For a bit extra every month, players can unlock the PS Plus Premium tier, which gives them access to a bunch of PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games. While PS Plus Premium's offerings have been a little lackluster recently, the tier does offer a few great stealth experiences. In the most recent PS Plus Premium update, the Sly Collection was made available. Collecting the first three PS2 Sly Cooper games, this remastered collection is perfect for newcomers to the Sly franchise, and is the ideal stealth game for younger audiences.

If players want even more of a throwback, then the first two Syphon Filter games are also available on PS Plus Premium. Originally released for the original PlayStation, these two Syphon Filter games are fairly primitive third-person stealth games, with some pretty clunky controls. But if players can look past that, then there's an iconic, engaging espionage game right at their fingertips.

On the PS3 side of things, Sniper Elite V2 is a great option. While it doesn't offer the same complexity as its many sequels, Sniper Elite V2 is still an enthralling stealth action game where sneaking up to the objective is just as important as taking the final shot. Though Sniper Elite V2 can be played more aggressively, the game rewards those who strategize and take their time to set up the perfect kill.
