PlayStation Plus subscribers are used to getting a few free games every month, but those who are subscribed to the pricier PS Plus Extra tier have access to many more titles. These games aren't for keeps, but they still available to PS Plus Extra subscribers for a considerable amount of time, similar to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass service. But with hundreds of games available through PS Plus extra, some PlayStation Plus subscribers may not even know where to start.

PS Plus Extra gets subscribers access to a dizzying number of games across PS4 and PS5, including some truly heavy hitters. A site called Plat Prices allows PS Plus subscribers to sort the PS Plus Extra games by their OpenCritic score, revealing nine titles that have a 90 or above rating.

The highest-rated games available to play through PS Plus Extra are headlined by God of War. God of War earned rave reviews when it first launched in 2018, with many hailing it as perhaps the best game in its series. God of War was acclaimed for its engrossing storytelling, hard-hitting action, and jaw-dropping visuals, which still hold up even against the newest games on the latest hardware. God of War was also one of the free PS Plus games recently, so even those with the basic PS Plus Essential subscription have had the opportunity to check out the game.

Best PS Plus Extra Games List

  • God of War - 95
  • Celeste - 93
  • Demon's Souls - 92
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - 92
  • Bloodborne - 91
  • Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition - 91
  • Shadow of the Colossus - 91
  • Tetris Effect - 90
  • Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition - 90

God of War is a big budget, blockbuster release, but the second-highest rated game available through PS Plus Extra is indie darling Celeste. Celeste is a tough-as-nails platformer with retro graphics and heartwarming story. Those that simply want to play to the end credits will have a decent challenge, but those that decide to 100% the game will truly have their skills put to the test. Celeste won numerous awards at the time of its release and is a big reason why there's so much hype in the indie space for creator Maddy Thorson's next game, Earthblade.

Two PlayStation console exclusives available through PS Plus Extra managed to earn a 92 rating from critics. This includes Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which is the latest game in Naughty Dog's cinematic Uncharted series and the game that wraps up Nathan Drake's story. It should be noted that the version of Uncharted 4 available through a PS Plus Extra subscription is the native PS4 release, as opposed to the PS5 version that released as part of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is currently unavailable to play through PS Plus Extra, but those willing to shell out the extra cash for a PS Plus Premium subscription can check out a free trial to see if it's worth the upgrade.

The other PlayStation exclusive with a 92 rating is Demon's Souls, though the original PlayStation 3 version isn't playable through PS Plus Extra. Those with PS Plus Premium in Japan can play the original PS3 release, but everyone else with PS Plus Extra can try the PlayStation 5 remake instead. The Demon's Souls PS5 remake was developed by Bluepoint Games, a studio known for putting out high-quality remakes. Its work on Demon's Souls is no different, earning widespread critical acclaim and generally considered one of the best PS5 games to date.

FromSoftware is well-represented when it comes to the best PS Plus Extra games. Besides Demon's Souls, fans can also try Bloodborne, the more action-oriented Soulslike that released as a PS4 exclusive back in 2015. There have been rumblings of a Bloodborne remake or remaster, though nothing official has been announced to date. It's unclear if a Bloodborne remake will ever materialize, so those interested should check out the PS4 version through PS Plus Extra.

Bloodborne has a 91 overall rating, as do Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition and Shadow of the Colossus. Hollow Knight, for the uninitiated, has a lot in common with FromSoftware's Soulslike games, and essentially plays like a Metroidvania-style twist on the formula. Shadow of the Colossus, meanwhile, is a PS4 remake of the classic PS2 game, and like Demon's Souls on PS5, it too was developed by Bluepoint Games.

And finally, two PS Plus Extra games have a 90 rating. One of them is Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, the fully-featured version of Guerrilla Games' open world action-RPG that includes the well-received Frozen Wilds expansion. The other is Tetris Effect, a modern twist on the classic puzzle game with impressive graphical upgrades.

Most of these games should stay available through PS Plus Extra indefinitely as they were published by PlayStation, but others may be removed. New games will be added to PS Plus Extra as well, so it's possible more games with a 90 or above rating could make it to the service in the near future.
