The new PlayStation Plus tiers launch today in the Americas. The revamped PS Plus service is already available to subscribers in Asia and Japan, but the library of games has a few notable differences. In addition to the extended lineup of the Premium tier, members in Japan have access to more games in the Extra tier, so it’ll be interesting to see if Sony makes any other changes in the western release.

PS Plus Extra and Premium function similarly to Xbox Game Pass. Unlike the original PlayStation Plus model, where users had access to games they had redeemed for the duration of their subscription, the library available to Extra and Premium members will change every month. Sony has confirmed that it will refresh the catalog in the middle of the month, and users will not be able to play any game that leaves the service. Unfortunately, it looks like one major title from the PS Plus Extra and Premium launch lineup is leaving shockingly soon.

According to its store page on the Malaysian PSN store, Red Dead Redemption 2 will leave the Extra and Premium tiers on September 20, 2022. A new option below the price confirms that gamers can play Red Dead Redemption 2 at no extra cost if they subscribe to the Extra tier. Below, users will notice a small note showing the offer’s expiration date, confirming that Red Dead Redemption 2 will leave the PS Plus Extra catalog on September 20.

ps plus extra and premium losing a major game

Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably one of the most popular PS4 games from the PS Plus Extra catalog, and many users will likely be surprised to see it leave in just a few months. However, this lines up with Rockstar’s strategy of offering their games as a part of subscription services, as GTA 5 similarly left Xbox Game Pass after three months in 2021.

RDR 2 is a long game, and new PS Plus Extra subscribers in September will probably have a difficult time finishing it before it leaves. Still, it’s good to have a clear indication of when a game is leaving PS Plus on the store page itself. It should be noted that Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently not available on PS5, so users will have to play the PS4 version of the game. Some fans may consider waiting for an upgraded edition, as a PS5 and Xbox Series X version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is reportedly in development.
