The PlayStation 5 is officially in the hands of gamers around the world following some beautiful launch day celebrations, and PS Plus subscribers are logging in to see what classic or new games they are going to experience on their next-gen console. Perhaps they are looking to revisit a classic from the previous generation enhanced by the next-gen hardware, and there's one good way to do that.
At launch, the PlayStation Plus Collection features 20 curated picks from the past generation that players will be able to dive into, but just how much space will those 20 games take up on the PS5's SSD?
What is the PlayStation Plus Collection?
The PlayStation Plus Collection is a selection of 20 games, featuring both first and third-party games, that PlayStation Plus members will have free access to on their PS5 on launch day. The split is 1o and 10 when it comes to first and third-party titles, providing an even mix of Sony-exclusives and features from other studios. Here are all 20 titles featured as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection currently, starting with the Sony first-party titles:

There are a ton of big names on both lists, and the PS Plus Collection could potentially add more games in the future if it does well enough. Big first and third party titles are noticeably absent from this list, like Spider-Man and more recent titles like The Last of Us 2and Ghost of Tsushima, but perhaps as time goes on, these big name games will make it to the collection as well.
Sony First Party Titles Breakdown
Sony has some big names from their first-party studios on display with the PlayStation Plus Collection. Games like the Kratos' latest journey in God of War, the timeless classic of The Last of Us: Remastered, and some other major hits are free for PS Plus subscribers. The amount of content on the first-party side alone is massive, featuring games that defined the past generation of gaming on the PlayStation 4. It stretches from the iconic launch-day title inFamous: Second Son all the way up to Days Gone and God of War.
When looking at the size comparisons of all the titles, it is worth noting that the sizes below are what is listed in the PlayStation store as the minimum requirements to download, and do not include any additional DLC or other content. Just in first-party titles alone, these games take up a whopping 337.14 GB of storage, roughly half the size of the PS5's internal SSD space. Granted, some of these titles are absolute worth their storage space, like the critically-acclaimed Last of Us and God of War. Plus for those who have not tried out these first-party games yet, there is no better way to experience them than running on the PS5's fast new hardware.
Third Party Titles Breakdown
While Sony's first-party line-up is pretty solid, the third-party features are nothing to scoff at either, unless trying to make the most of the PS5's SSD space. The third-party list is a very solid collection of games, and one that could very well benefit from even more titles being added. Lots of great third-party games made their way to the PlayStation 5, and would look great alongside these games here. Again, the storage size of the files is based on the PlayStation store's listing for each of the titles and does not include DLC or other content. Here is the third party breakdown:

Storage Management Woes
The grand total for all 20 PlayStation Plus Collection games totals out to 663.52 GB, which is essentially ALL of the PS5's SSD space. Now, realistically, no sane person would install all 20 games at one time unless they had no other games to play. Even so, several of these titles are very long-form games (such as Persona 5), so a couple can be installed and jumped between as the mood arises, but there is honestly no reason to install all 20 at once.
Additionally, while the PS5 does not support internal SSD expansion at launch, external hard drives work just fine so long as the games are PS4 games—which all of these are. Players can enjoy any of these games via an external hard drive without worrying about that limited SSD space. But at the end of the day, it's truly up to the player to decide where to install their coveted video games, whether that's on the SSD for quicker load times and better performance, or on an external to save the SSD space for PS5 titles.
