When Sony launched the PlayStation 5, it did so alongside major changes to its PlayStation Plus subscription program. Besides giving PlayStation Plus subscribers access to a free PS5 game every month alongside the two PS4 offerings, Sony also introduced the PS Plus Collection, giving PS5 owners access to some of the best PS4 games ever made. The PS Plus Collection games have remained static since they were introduced, but that will change come May.

Along with revealing the free PS Plus games for April 2022, Sony also confirmed that critically-acclaimed JRPG Persona 5 is leaving the PS Plus Collection come Wednesday, May 11. While this may be disappointing news to some, it's not that big of a deal if one already has a PS5 and PS Plus subscription handy. If PS Plus subscribers claim Persona 5 through the PS Plus Collection, they will have access to the game for the duration of their PlayStation Plus subscription, even after it's been removed from the lineup.

This is in contrast to how Sony will be handling some games with its new PS Plus tiers. This June, Sony will be making more huge changes to PS Plus by introducing the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers. These tiers will include access to a lineup of games that will be "regularly refreshed," meaning they will rotate in and out, similar to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Now. The PS Plus Collection games are instead treated like normal free PlayStation Plus games, so all fans have to do is claim them, and they'll have the titles readily available in their digital library for as long as they're signed up for PS Plus.

Even so, it may be disappointing for some to see the PS Plus Collection lose a game, especially since it has yet to add a game. To be fair, it was clear from the get-go that new games may never come to the PS Plus Collection, but it's still understandable if some fans are disappointed by this.

With the new PS Plus subscription tiers, it seems like the PS Plus Collection will basically become obsolete. After all, some games that seemed like they would be good candidates for the PS Plus Collection, like God of War or Marvel's Spider-Man, are instead coming to PS Plus Extra and Premium.

Fans shouldn't hold their breath for new games to come to the PS Plus Collection, and in fact, the more likely scenario is that other games could leave the lineup. After all, there are multiple games available through the PS Plus Collection that were published by Activision, a company that PlayStation competitor Microsoft is in the process of acquiring. If any other games are removed from the PS Plus Collection, though, fans can expect Sony to give them fair warning, just as it's done with Persona 5. In the meantime, PS Plus subscribers may just want to make sure that they've already went through and claimed all the PS Plus Collection games just in case.
