There's also a PS Plus free trial that comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, so the game is still tied to the service regardless if one needs to be a subscriber to claim it.
PS Plus subscribers knew to expect big things from the March 2022 free games based on what they received in March in previous years. Some of big free PS Plus games for March in previous years have included Bloodborne, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Ratchet & Clank, so many accurately predicted that March 2022 would similarly be a memorable month for the service.
That same logic may be applied to the free PS Plus games for April 2022. April does not have quite the same legacy as March when it comes to the quality of the free PS Plus games, but there are those looking at the free PS Plus games for April 2021 believing they may offer a hint at what to expect for April 2022. For those who may not remember, the free PS Plus games for April 2021 were Oddworld: Soulstorm, Days Gone, and Zombie Army 4.
Oddworld: Soulstorm was significant because it was a brand-new, day one release for PS Plus subscribers on PS5 to check out. Days Gone, while not the most critically-acclaimed PlayStation exclusive, nonetheless has its fair share of fans and is generally considered to be underrated. And then there's Zombie Army 4, which is not the highest-profile PS Plus game ever released by any means, but still provides solid entertainment for co-op minded gamers.
No firm pattern has been established for April like it has for March, so fans shouldn't hold their breath. However, it's entirely possible that the free PS Plus games for April 2022 will match or even exceed last year's offerings. None of the free PS Plus games for April 2022 have actually been announced at the time of this writing, though, so fans should keep their expectations in check.
