With the dawn of SDCC 2011, comes the rise of all sorts of great info for some of the biggest games coming out, including one of Activision’s still-sleeping titles, Prototype 2. Finally announcing a release date late last night for April 4 of next year, the game has been prepped to put fledgling protagonist James Heller on the heels of Alex Mercer to stop the New York infection outbreak, and avenge the death of his family.
All of this — outside the release date — is nothing new to the well versed gamer, yet it does lead into a new trailer that was posted along with the announcement.
Given that Prototype 2 is going to be set to bursting with bigger abilities, stronger enemies and the occasional chance to kick a flying helicopter, the new trailer lets players see a little more into the devastation surrounding Heller and NYZ.
While the original had been slightly brushed under the carpet due to a bad release window, Radical Games has been trying to redefine the sequel to make it more appealing to the mass audience, while also making sure it doesn’t lose what made it earn its keep. When Game Rant got a chance to preview the game back at E3 this year, there was a hefty focus on customizable powers and combat, while aiming to focus more on the storytelling aspect of the game.
The trailer helps reassert the fact that Prototype 2 will certainly keep players on their toes. With the brand new main character dealing with the death of his family, fighting to save New York, and trying to find the man responsible it’s looking like there’s a lot more to this game than meets the eye.
The only issue that can be seen is that April is a long way away, but if it means the sequel gets the timed release the developers would have loved with the original, the wait may be worth it.
Prototype 2 is set to release April 4, 2012 for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360.
