Capcom recently confirmed the existence of a brand new Resident Evil game called Project Resistance, with a full reveal set to take place on September 9 as part of its Tokyo Game Show festivities. Leaked images of Project Resistance have left fans to believe that the game will have a co-op and multiplayer focus, with some speculating that it will even end up being Resident Evil: Outbreak 3. However, as it turns out, Project Resistance could actually just be a co-op mode for the unannounced Resident Evil 3 remake.

AestheticGamer, who has been known to accurately leak Resident Evil news in the past, addressed Project Resistance in recent tweets. They say that they are "almost 100% positive" that Project Resistance is either a mode for the Resident Evil 3 remake, or it started as a mode for the game and then spun off into a standalone product.

Considering the dizzying success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, it would be odd for Capcom to shift its focus to a multiplayer Resident Evil game. Not to mention there are shared locations between Resident Evil 2 and 3, so it would theoretically cut down on development costs if Capcom made a Resident Evil 3 remake as opposed to a new game completely from scratch. Plus, past rumors have said Capcom is actively developing the Resident Evil 3 remake, so it wouldn't be all that surprising if Project Resistance is in fact a game mode for the RE3 remake or at least originated as one.

Luckily, fans won't have to wait all that much longer to learn more about Project Resistance and put the rumors to rest. Capcom has already announced that it will reveal Project Resistance with a trailer on September 9, just ahead of the Tokyo Game Show event. While it's unclear exactly how extensive that trailer will be, it should answer at least some questions about what the new Resident Evil game will entail.

In the meantime, AestheticGamer previously leaked that the Resident Evil 3 remake release date would be in 2020. So if Project Resistance is a completely separate game, it will be interesting to see if the Resident Evil 3 Remake will be delayed to 2021 to give it some breathing room.

The Resident Evil 3 Remake is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
