Before the days of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, rhythm/music games were a bit quirkier. The genre was largely led by PaRappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura and Gitaroo Man developer Keiichi Yano, who both succeeded in creating memorable rhythm games for PlayStation consoles. Now the minds behind two of the genre’s biggest hits are joining forces to create a brand new game, currently known as Project Rap Rabbit, which is being funded through Kickstarter.

The Kickstarter for Project Rap Rabbit is now live, with the game’s creators asking for a whopping $1,100,000 in funding to make the game. If the Project Rap Rabbit Kickstarter manages to meet its hefty funding goal, it will launch August 2018 for PC and PlayStation 4.

Project Rap Rabbit‘s stretch goals will see the game ported to additional systems. At $3,100,000, an Xbox One version will be produced, and at $4,950,000 in funding, fans can expect to see a Nintendo Switch version of the game as well. Other funding stretch goals include $3,500,000 to add an eighth level to the game, and $3,900,000 to add versus multiplayer.

Considering how high Project Rap Rabbit‘s initial funding goal is, especially since it’s representing a niche genre of gaming, it seems unlikely that it will meet most of its stretch goals. In fact, Project Rap Rabbit meeting its initial funding goal at all seems like it will be an uphill battle, but it has until June 19th to meet that goal, with about $35,000 pledged so far.

Since the game has such close ties to the PlayStation brand, it’s possible that if its Kickstarter falls short of expectations that Sony will provide the additional funding necessary to complete it. After all, Sony worked out a similar arrangement with the Kickstarter-funded game Shenmue 3, and the company already has an established relationship with the developers behind Project Rap Rabbit.

Perhaps we’re underestimating Project Rap Rabbit‘s potential and the game will blow away its Kickstarter funding goals. We will find out by June 19th if the game is enticing enough to raise the required $1,100,000 to enter active development.

Project Rap Rabbit is being funded on Kickstarter for PC and PS4, with Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions possible as well.
