Fans of brainteasers and riddles now have a new test for their finely tuned craniums as Level 5 brings us a trailer for Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle on the 3DS. While it isn’t the next title on the slate for American shores, Mask of Miracle has opened up a new realm of possibilities using the 3DS technology.

As a fan of all of the Professor Layton games, it saddens me to know that the follow up to Unwound Future (North American’s most recent release) has been out in Japan for over a year now. My hope is that with all the hype surrounding the 3DS, Nintendo and Level 5 will work to close the gap between the two countries by releasing the next Layton game, Specter’s Flute, very soon and then bring us Mask of Miracle right after the 3DS release.

Mask of Miracle sees the titular Layton and plucky sidekick Luke following a mysterious Jean Descole to Casino City, a town that was created using the power of the Mask of Miracle. The mystery-solving duo must uncover the secrets of the mask in order to better understand the city in which they have found themselves. Expect many twists and turns as per the Layton formula and never think that you have solved the mystery until the very end.

3D technology has always been the type that if it finds the right venue for its use then it really sings. For me, the puzzles that are contained within the Layton property are certainly those that hold a lot of promise by using 3D. While the trailer only gives a 2D glimpse at two puzzles, I believe that Level 5 has some real head-scratchers in store for gamers. Perhaps the addition of 3D will garner enough attention to transform Layton into a popular DS staple like it is in Japan.

So Ranters, are you excited for the prospect of a Professor Layton game on the 3DS? Let us know in the comments below.
