It has been 10 years since Ubisoft released a new Prince of Persia game, but the company announced a few days ago in its Ubisoft Forward presentation that it will be remaking the 2003 classic title, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Although Ubisoft's confirmation is exciting news for Prince of Persia fans, it didn't come as a surprise given images of the Sands of Time remake  leaked prior to its announcement. Now, for those who are interested to re-live their favorite moment in the game, here is a breakdown of everything there is to know about the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Changes From The Original

According to the game's director, Pierre-Sylvain Gires, the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will stay mostly the same with its original counterpart. However, the developer also emphasized that the upcoming game will be a full-on remake and not a remaster of the 2003 title. In a statement, Pierre-Sylvain Gires revealed that the upcoming game has been rebuilt from the ground up, but Ubisoft will also be adding some improvements and changes in the upcoming remake.

Moreover, players should also expect new cinematic sequences together with enhanced voices, music, parkour animations, and many more. The game's camera, controls, and combat have all been rebuilt from scratch to ensure that the game will hold up to today's standards. Additionally, Ubisoft confirmed that the original Sand of Time will also be playable right from the remake's menu. Players can also expect the return of voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, who provided the voice work in the original game and has since been featured in other high profile characters such as Peter Parker in Marvel's Spider-Man.

Price, Pre-Order Bonuses, Platforms, and Release Date

During the Ubisoft Forward 2020 event, the company revealed that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake will be released on January 21, 2021. Of course, players would know that Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles should already be released at this time, but Ubisoft confirmed that the game will only launch on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. However, players who will immediately upgrade to next-generation consoles should not fret given that the remake should be backward compatible with both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Pre-orders for the game are also available now, and Prince of Persia hopefuls will receive bonuses such as a classic weapon set, classic filter, and classic price outfit.

Unfortunately, it appears that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake won't be supporting the Switch or Google Stadia. However, it wouldn't be unlikely if a port to these platforms will be available sometime in the future, especially since it is not unheard of for games to come to the Switch and Stadia well after it has been released to other platforms. As for pricing, the game will be available for $39.99 on consoles and $29.99 for the PC. It is worth noting though that the PC version of the game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store and Uplay+, which is Ubisoft's streaming service.

What is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time All About?

Prince of Persia remake leak

To the uninitiated, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one of the most popular entries in the series, whose origins date back to 1989. Since then, Prince of Persia became Ubisoft's flagship franchise, and its popularity only dwindled with the release of Assassin's Creed in 2007. The game's story revolves around the titular Prince who is on a quest to recollect the Sands of Time and place them back to a magic hourglass after being tricked to releasing them in the first place.

The game features action-adventure gameplay that combines combat and traditional platforming mechanics. One of the hallmark features of The Sands of Time was the ability to rewind time whenever the player makes a mistake. Shortly after its release in 2003, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time received glowing reviews from both players and critics and is often considered as the best entry in the franchise. Due to the game's popularity, a film adaptation starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince was released in 2010.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is set to release on January 21, 2021, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
