From Screen Rant:

Finally! Our first real look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has arrived in the form of this HD trailer courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the popular video game series which made it big with the release of Sands of Time back in 2003 and its pair of sequels the following two years, the video game adaptation is hoped to help bring a change to a movie genre that has traditionally suffered from low quality movies based on known video game franchises.

Prince of Persia stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan (unnamed in the video game) as he tries save the world using the an ancient time-manipulating weapon and the help of a foe/love-interest.

Check out the action-packed and visually appealing trailer after the jump.

For those unfamiliar with the story of the movie, here's the synopsis:

From the team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films present PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, an epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia. A rogue prince (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (GEMMA ARTERTON) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time–a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Watch and enjoy:

As Screen Rant master Vic points out, this trailer sure has the feel and aesthetic of Stephen Sommers' The Mummy. With the team behind the movie, we can see that this is a classic summer blockbuster for everyone along the same lines of The Mummy and Pirates of the Caribbean.

There sure are some extreme and epic visuals, and I dig the shout out to Ubisoft's (the game developer) other game franchise which followed in the footsteps of their modern Prince of Persia a series: Assassin's Creed (the scene where he's on the tower near the beginning about the jump off).

I can't deny that the trailer looks like a lot of fun but I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see two of the things most important and visually stunning about the games: the Prince running and jumping of walls and epic multi-enemy sword fights mixed with a little Zack Snyder-style slow-mo. I have a feeling there's some of that to come though.

Starring alongside Mr. Gyllenhaal are Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace & the upcoming Clash of the Titans), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2 & the upcoming The Sorcerer's Apprentice) Ben Kingsley (The Assignment & the upcoming Shutter Island).

If you missed it, check out the pitch trailer that Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner and writer John August used to sell the movie idea to Disney. It's footage taken from the game, strung together to show what kind of movie and visuals they could employ in live-action.

What do you think of the first official Prince of Persia movie trailer? Could this break the trend of awful video game movies and open the industry up to the next big thing after comic book movies?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is directed by Mike Newell and opens in theaters May 28, 2010.
