Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was a critical and commercial success when it was originally released in 2003, with many praising its action and puzzle elements. However, the series struggled to keep up with changes in the gaming industry and saw a steady critical decline as the years went on. The Sands of Time did receive a film adaptation but upon release, this was also a flop in almost every regard. Nonetheless, the recent news of a remake excited fans who still remember the glory days of the franchise.

Rumors had persisted about a remake of The Sands of Time and when an industry insider leaked an upcoming announcement many fans were excited to see what the game would look like. However, leaks have now surfaced that present the project in a less than flattering light and even lead to questions about the term remake being used. It is unclear if the images that have surfaced are indicative of the final product but the source does carry some validity.

The images are from the Russian uPlay store and because they are from a commerce website they may be an early listing that has been put up prematurely. The shots look like they belong to previous generations of consoles with blocky textures and graphics, paling in comparison to the standard of remakes that players have become accustomed to. With this in mind, the game may be sold as a remaster however players will likely be disappointed at the result of this speculation which has surrounded Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for a lengthy period.

Industry insider Daniel Ahmed has already responded to these images claiming that "The gameplay looks much better" before adding that "This is such a bad way for the game to leak." In many ways, Ahmed is correct that these kinds of images damage the product before any reveal can contextualize the release. With that said, these images would be difficult for fans to appreciate no matter what the context, and it will be interesting to see how the Ubisoft Forward event addresses the game.

Many have hoped that the Prince of Persia franchise would return, but these screenshots may cause fans to stop and reconsider. With that said, these images may not be legitimate and many will hope that the final product that is showcased offers far better graphics than the images that have been leaked.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is said to be in development.
